Patients in need of a routine hip and knee replacement are set to benefit from a new ‘one stop shop’ styled orthopaedic service provided at the new Bridgwater Community Hospital.
Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), the GP led organisation that plans and funds local health services, has awarded a three year contract (with the opportunity to extend a further two years) to Musgrove Park Hospital to deliver a new styled orthopaedic outpatient service with seamless referral to surgery.
Somerset CCG had previously sought the views of patient groups and carers to help develop a more integrated model of service. By April 2014, the CCG had a shortlist of three organisations wishing to provide a new and improved orthopaedic outpatient service from Bridgwater Hospital.
Bidding organisations were asked to come up with proposals for the development of a more integrated treatment path for orthopaedic patients. The aim was to deliver shorter waiting times, whilst creating convenient local access to an outpatient service where diagnostic tests and pre-operative assessments could be carried out before the patient would be given a date of their choice for their hip or knee surgery to be carried out.
Hip or knee surgery will not be performed at Bridgwater Hospital. Patients will have their surgery performed in Taunton.
Commenting on Musgrove Park Hospital’s successful bid to deliver the new orthopaedic outpatient service in Bridgwater, Dr Ed Ford, from Somerset CCG said: “Musgrove Park Hospital’s bid demonstrated a clear understanding of the service required. By providing a one-stop-shop approach to orthopaedic outpatient services we expect patients from Bridgwater and the surrounding area to be less inconvenienced by traveling to clinics in Taunton and experience shorter waiting times for their surgery.”
Musgrove Park Hospital orthopaedic consultant and clinical director Alan Dunkley said: “It is fantastic news that we have been awarded this contract to enhance the service we can provide to our patients in the Bridgwater area.
“The services will be rolled out in a phased way, starting with our out-patient appointments, followed by pre-assessment services– meaning patients will be able to get all the care they need at Bridgwater Hospital, only needing to travel to Musgrove Park Hospital if they need surgery.”
