Martin trained as an architect and has a Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Strathclyde University as well as a Master’s Degree in Business from the Adam Smith Business School at Glasgow University.
He has worked at a senior level in both the public and private sectors: as an architect in private practice; Assistant Chief Planning Officer for Glasgow City Council; Director of Property and Environment for Scottish Development Agency; Deputy Chief Executive of Tyne and Wear Development Corporation; Development Director at Windex Properties; and Director of Property and Environment for Scottish Enterprise.
In 2000 he set up a planning and economic development consultancy in Exeter which prepared community based development strategies for thirty towns in the south west. This work included extensive community and stakeholder consultation, feasibility studies, business plans, teaching and capacity building. He now specialises in advising conservation charities in the south west on raising funds to restore listed buildings.
Martin has been a member of the Polden Medical Practice Patients’ Participation Group for the last three years; he is a parish councillor and a member of Sedgemoor District Council’s Standards Committee. He is married, lives in Chilton Polden and both his daughter and son-in-law are anaesthetists with an NHS Trust in London.
