NORTH SEDGEMOOR HEALTH FORUM SHARES QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ON DEMENTIA

What's New Image

Patient representatives from North Sedgemoor are sharing a series of helpful questions and answers about dementia that arose following a local health forum meeting.

Meeting at the older persons’ assessment centre called the Mulberry Centre, on the site of Berrow Medical Centre, members of the North Sedgemoor Health Forum invited dementia experts from the Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to answer a wide range of questions on everything from how the different types of dementia are diagnosed to what all of us can do to reduce our risk of experiencing dementia in later life.

Amongst the experts answering dementia questions was Dr Rebecca Wilson, Clinical Psychologist Older Peoples Services, and Aaron McKenzie, a Psychiatrist.  Both work for the Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Chair of the North Sedgemoor Health Forum and Chair of the Burnham-on-Sea War Memorial Hospital, Pat Barthram, said: “Health forum members really appreciate the opportunity to have detailed discussions with local health professionals about issues and health services that matter to them.  As all of us are living longer and the local NHS expects to support many more people living with dementia over the next decade, patients and carers need to understand that early diagnosis of the condition is important.

“We also need to help organisations like the Alzheimer’s Society in their efforts to improve public understanding of the disease.  We hope that by sharing these questions and answers from local dementia experts we can help to overcome the many misconceptions surrounding dementia.”
